Bella sleeps in her crate at night and is in the x-pen during the day while we're at work with her toys, bed and water. I think it's safer for our babies to be in a confined space where they can't get hurt. Granted, I'd worry about what damage she could do if left unsupervised but I'd worry even more about her safety. Dogs really are creatures of habit and really don't like change so if you've been using the crate I would keep it up. We keep our lab in the crate during the day (it's a very large crate that she can move around in) and I decided I wanted to let her out in the side yard during the day so she could get more excersize and after about a week I gave up because she would go straight to that crate and didn't want to go outside, it's become her "safe place".
