If my vet said he is just a dog to me, I'd be looking for another vet.
When I took Misha our Maltese to the vet she said "What do we have here a Terrier?" I found another vet right after. It took me 4 vets to find one that is knowledgeable with small dogs. I love the vet I have now, and he knows they are not just another dog. He knows they are my babies. He always spends extra time with questions that I might have. He's wonderful.
P.S Silkies have a longer snout.
