Is it Intervertebral Disc disease? Also commonly called slipped disc, herniated disc, ruptured disc, etc. Most commonly seen in breeds with long backs and short legs such as a dachshund. In between the individual vertebrae there are intervertebral discs made up of an outer fibrous shell (called the annulus fibrosus) and an inner pulpy center (called the Nucleus puposus). These discs stabilize the joints between vertebrae and act as shock absorbers. When a dog has intervertebral disc disease, the outer annulus fibrosus degenerates and eventually the inner nucleus pulposus canpass through the weakened outer annulus. When this happens it puts pressure and the spinal cord and kills nerve tissue which can cause paralysis of the hind limbs..I think the proper term is Chondroid Metaplasia
