Many years ago (probabaly 40) we had a rat terrier spayed and the vet stitched her up but as soon as we got home, the dog took her stitches out and of course there was a gaping hole. The vet said to just leave her alone, she would heal from the inside out and she would take care of it herself. This dog lived to 18 years of age and never had any other problems from the surgery. I know it sounds and looks gross but our story had a happy ending. I hope this poor baby has the same.
