Aside from the obvious symptoms of going into heat, is growling and snarling when you try to "take a peek" one of them?

I had Kalina groomed today and Crissy said that she thought Kalina looked swollen and might be going into heat. I was shocked. She's only 6 months old and my Vet said to wait until her baby canines fall out to get her spayed.

Anyway, I have been trying to look, but she is not about to let me - growling and snarling and just getting crazy. Is this a normal reaction if she IS going into heat? She is also licking a lot!!
