I have also had a couple of tiny ones struggle and not make it after having their tails docked. Now I wait until they are a week old instead of 3-5 days. My vet is OK with that because they are so small but with a larger breed he would not wait that long. They seemed to do much better waiting the extra couple of days. The boys got to keep their tails due to circumstances beyond my control. The new litter of girls got theirs docked. Since I'm not breeding for show, I think I may start leaving their tails natural.

It's amazing how different they tails are. Apollo's is fairly straight but does lay on his back. Lil' T's has the cutest curl over his back. I've only seen a couple of pictures of yorkies with tails, mostly European and their tails were more out the back like other dogs.
