anal glands are not something you can normally see and you shouldn't be able to smell them. Since you are see and smell them i'd take her to the vet to be checked out in case they are infected or impacted. Personally i do not think anal glands are something that you should take care of yourself or have a groomer do if this is a first time problem. If its something that needs to be done on a monthly basis (or more) and you know nothing is wrong (infection) then by all means do it yourself or have the groomer do it, but for the first couple of times i'd let the vet or vet tech handle it.
