Well, an actual obstruction can wreak havoc - even cause death. Obstructions, like a lot of "gut" issues, can cause "referred pain" - meaning the episode is down here, but it hurts up here. Sort of like in humans - when they have gall bladder issues, their right shoulder can have severe pain.
Do dogs have gall bladders I wonder....?
So, if perhaps his body was working through severe constipation, he could have had severe pain - but my goodness, the reaction was so severe!
