I lived in brooklyn for 10 yrs and currently visit at least twice a month on weekends. Some of the good areas in brooklyn are Park Slope and Williamsburg. Canarsie is a very nice area also. You should visit different areas at different times of the day and night to get a feel of the enviroment.
Nyc on the whole is very pet friendly and you would love it there. I can't wait to move back
