My Otis is a runner, too. He makes it virtually impossible for me to go out the front door. In my case, it's not that he doesn't want me to leave, it's that he wants to go out and explore!! Here are a few things that have helped me.........
I keep a broom by the front door. If he still persists, I pick it up and hold it in front of him. I would never touch him with it, but just holding it in front of him makes him back off.
Also, If I know people are going to be coming in and out of the front door, I'll put 2 panels of an ex-pen in front of the door and have people step over it.
It seems his terrier nature takes over when I try to leave out of the front door. I'm not sure any amt of training would stop his drive to get outside.
