The same thing happened with my 4 yo nephew. It turned out that the kid that he bit was hitting him when no one was looking, every day, until finally my nephew lost it and bit him. The teachers finally caught on to it. He does have a right to defend himself. Unfortunately at this age, biting is what they think of.
