I think the best day to do a spay is when you have time off after. These are the questions I would ask:
What kind of anesthesia do you use (should be Isoflourine or Sevoflourine)?
If you give the dog a sedative or short-acting anesthesia to intubate what kind do you use (should not be a barbituate)?
What size tube do you use to intubate small dogs (should be the smallest possible)?
Does a vet intubate or is it a tech?
How do you monitor animals when they are under anesthesia (they should monitor with a pulsoximeter)?
Do they heat the surgery table/use heating pads (you don't want your baby losing body heat)?
Do they send you home with pain meds (in my mind it is a must)?
Do they send you home with antibiotics (also a must)?
Do they keep your dog overnight (if they do there should be someone there with her the WHOLE time)?
Do they use IV catheters (they should)?
You have to go with what you are comfortable with. Some people might be okay with a tech doing the intubation, so it's best to talk to your vet.
Yes, I would do bloodwork. There is no way around it for me.
I hope this helps you.
