I can honestly say that every day I walk Teddy, he marks every bush, tree, plant, post, etc that he can see. He didn't start it until he turned 3 months. He doesn't do it often when he's around familar places, but if he isn't then he will mark. I'm only basing this on my experience, however. He doesn't do it in the house as often as he used to, so maybe this will go away with time. But, don't worry its not as bad as you think. If you tell him, "no" enough, he will stop.
