I use Heartguard year around. Even though our yorkies are at a lower risk of getting heartworms than your average outside dog, it can still happen and the risk isn't worth it to me. It's an inexpensive preventative, and Lacy loves getting her monthly heartguard chew (or treat as she thinks it is). I've seen what heartworms can do to a dog's heart and lungs...not a good thing at all. Best thing you can do is prevent it

Educate yourself and buy from reputable breeders or rescue.
