They do have a mind of their own. Ours is trained to go outdoors, and she was fairly well trained within about two months of having her, but I do remember when she was about one year old, she sat down next to my foot and peed on the carpet while I was just standing there. I really don't think they are hard to train, I just think they are hard headed.
