I have a male yorkie and a female maltese, and they get along beautifully. I agree that boys are big time mommy's boys and very affectionate, and girls are more like little princesses but still very affectionate.
I think it mostly has to do with that particular dog's personality, not necessarily the sex.
To answer your question about marking...Many male dogs do not mark at all as long as they are neutered by six months. Miko wasn't able to be neutered until he was 1 yr old due to medical issues, and he never ever marks inside the house.
