I think a smart option is taking that $55 a month and putting it in a savings account and using that as accidental insurance money. At least then it's still your money so if nothing happens you're okay but if something does you have some money to fall back on. I haven't done much research but what I've heard of pet insurance is that it's overpriced and doesn't cover much.
