Default Re-Adding a pee spot?

My guys are getting very, very good about going outside to pee or poop. So much that if Rupert has to go while we are upstairs, he will go out onto the upstairs Patio, which I never showed him.

When I have to leave them, I put them in an X-Pen attached to the bathroom which has a kind of litter box in it. For awhile, they were using the litter box. Now that they have grasped the 'outdoor' concept, they seem to eschew the litter box in favor of the floor in front of it when I am gone.

I think my hold on "Outside" is still pretty fragile so I don't want to do anything to ruin that but I'd really like them to go back to using the box when I am away. Is the best idea just to ride it out and wait for them to catch on to it themselves? I find their learning pattern is like that: no progress -- no progress -- no progress -- and then, just when I am ready to scream, they suddenly 'get it'!!
