It is not acceptable behavior though. Try this, give him his bone, wait until he is pretty into it and then gradually walk over to him holding out something that in his mind is higher value than the bone, something that you know he likes more. Let him sniff it, he should drop the bone and take what you have. Tell him good boy and pick the bone up, walk away with it leaving him with the item that he prefers.
Keep doing this time and time again until he realises that giving you things is great because he gets something better in return. Once he is swapping items with you easily, add a command such as 'thankyou' or 'give'.
This will take time and you have to be prepared to put the effort in but eventually once the command is installed in him you will no longer have to play the swap game because he will be pre programmed into thinking giving you things is great. |
What your suggesting is right but also easier said than done.
Buddy would never give up his bone for anything else no matter
what it was. Believe me I tried everything when we had this
problem and taking the problem away was the only thing that
corrected it.
