My Lady has uti's all the time. Usually when they come back it quickly it means they never really went away in the first place.
Did your vet do a sterile culture to find out what kind of bacteria was causing the infection? If not, the antibiotics he gave her probably didn't didn't clear it up. Lots of times vets will guess and prescribe an antibiotic that works in most cases, but if it doesn't work, it should be followed up with a culture.
80% of all uti's in both dogs and humans are caused by E-coli. Unfortunately, there is no one antibiotic that can kill E-Coli as it has become very resistant to drugs. Lady had an E-Coli uti this winter that took months to clear up. We just kept trying different antibiotics before we found something that worked. It turned out she had two different strains of E-Coli and needed two different antibiotics at the same time. |
