You can learn! I taught myself by tearing apart an old dress and writing down exactly what kind of stitches were used and where the little scissor cuts were for shaping, and where the interfacing went. Then I bought a Singer sewing book and just started doing it. I had a few disasters but now I would say I'm pretty good.
For crocheting, I just bought some patterns and crocheted in the mirror because I'm left-handed and patterns are for right-handed people.
