I have both. I have a car seat that hangs from the head rest for travelling in the car and I have a "purse" carrier for carrying Lexi with me. Depends on what your intentions are. If you only purchase the car seat, will you carry your dog once you reach your destination? If you only purchase the purse/carrier then the dog can't see out of the window while travelling. Although there's a strap to attach to a harness in the purse/carrier, I don't feel safe having Lexi in there while in the car. There's not a lot of room to move and the purse could go flying if we ever got into an accident or if I braked too hard.

Personal preference I suppose. I couldn't do without both.
