Pitbull-type rips out stomach of little dog
Humane society hunts for dangerous dog

A pitbull-type dog that wasn't muzzled snatched a small dog from an elderly woman's arms Monday and ripped out its stomach, the Peterborough Humane Society said.

“It picked it up, threw it around and actually ripped its stomach right out,” said Brad Algar, acting general manager. “It just ripped it all to pieces.”

Veterinarians have said the eight-pound Yorkshire Terrier named Riley has a 50 per cent shot at surviving after undergoing two surgeries.

Algar said he wants the public's help to track down the pitbull-type before another animal — or person — is hurt.

He said he calls it a pitbull-type because the dog appeared to be part pitbull, but may not have been a purebreed.

Algar is now patrolling East City neighbourhoods.

“Not for the sake of enforcement or getting this lady’s vet bill paid, but this dog is dangerous,” he said.
“I want to get control of this dog. This dog is going to kill some kid if it’s acting like this.”

Monday's attack started when two young women had been walking the dog along Armour Road.

The pitbull-type spotted the small dog and pulled its walker across the street, Algar said.

While Barbara Hedmann, 76, wasn’t harmed, the five-year-old terrier had massive injuries.

The dog's owner Gail McQuaid said she was at work Monday when her partner’s mother, Hedmann, walked Riley down the street near St. Luke’s Anglican Church around 11 a.m.

“When she looked up this dog was running across the street,” McQuaid said.

Seeing the dog coming at her — narrowly avoiding being hit by a car — Hedmann said she raised Riley above her shoulders.

But the pitbull-type jumped and tore Riley from her hands.

Hedmann retrieved her dog and ran back to her house shouting for help. A neighbour rushed out and took the dog to his veterinarian on The Kingsway. Tears welled up in McQuaid’s eyes when she said she couldn’t see her pet because he gets too excited and must rest if he’s going to have a shot at surviving.

“They’re really broken up. This dog was like a child to them,” Algar said.

McQuaid said the family has been driving around the neighbourhood looking for the dog and warning other dog owners and parents of young children to be careful.

Tears returned to McQuaid’s eyes when she noted one such couple returned yesterday to give her a card of condolence.

“I don’t know these people,” she said. “That just warmed my heart.”

But that feeling left quickly when she questioned why the two young women walking the dog fled.

“Hopefully they’ll have a heart and they’ll call,” McQuaid said. “They never came to see if she was OK or the dog.”

The two women are described as being in their mid to late teens or early 20s.

One is said to have shoulder-length light brown hair and the other with short dark hair. The dog had a white or blonde coat.

Anyone who witnessed the attack or has information is urged to contact the Humane Society.

New provincial rules governing pit bulls come into effect Aug. 29 and owners having until Oct. 29 to comply, Algar said. The rules include putting a muzzle on the dogs when outside the home and using a short leash.
