I'd say go for either an x-pen or puppy proof one room. He will need to have some space to move around and play. Young puppies can't hold their bladder for long so I don't think you can expect him not to have an accident while your gone. Personally i'm not a fan of putting dogs in crates for long hours, they need to be able to move around, interestingly in sweden its illegal to use a crate apart from in the car.
