Default E-Collar

I can't deal with this anymore!!! Archie HATES his e-collar. He can't eat out of his regular food bowl, he keeps bumping into doorways, people, etc. He can't get to scratch behind his ear or do anything! All he does is lay on his side because that's all he CAN do. And the vet said to leave it on for 7 - 10 days! I just can't bear the thought of him having to keep that thing on. We can't even take him out for proper walks because his leash is a harness and it won't go over his head.

So...with your helpful advice, I will make the big decision. Can I take it off? He was just neutered, and they put the e-collar on dogs that are prone to licking themselves, but I noticed that Archie is able to lick himself with the collar on anyway. I am thinking to keep an eye on him and just train him not to lick it by telling him No! 7-10 days seems excessive, too. How long did your dog take to heal?

E-collars are SO HORRIBLE! Why couldn't just put something on the stitches that makes it taste horrible or put some sort of band-aid-y sort of thing instead of a giant lampshade around his head.
