You should get over there ASAP and demand your baby back ...
explain to them that things are different now and that your mom had NO right to unilaterally decide to rehome Butters ...

Let them know you appreciate that they "baby sat" for Butters but that he is really NOT theirs ... and get his leash on and leave.

If they oppose, go there with the "law" and prove that he is yours ...

That is such a sad story .
