You have taught Ducan that being put in the wire cage = you leaving.
Here some suggestion you may want to try:
1. Feed him in his crate
2. Put him in his crate for 5 second and if he behaves, reward him. Increase time in crate as he is more comfortable with it.
3. Put the crate in the same room as you are in and put him in it.
4. Give him something to chew or play with that he likes but only gets in when he is in the crate.
What you are doing is trying to disassociate "crate=leaving" also establish crate is a safe place to be.
