I do all my own painting, and love it! Yes, you'lll need a primer, I recommend the Kilz stuff. It works great and it's available at Walmart. Sanding isn't really necessary unless it's a HIGH gloss enamel. BTW, I recommend Eggshell finish, it's got the nice matte appearance of Flat, with the wear of a semi-gloss
