I have always painted my own home on the interior. My advice would be to sand the surface a bit. You don't have to totally sand down the previous paint but just go over it and make sure it's nice and smooth. There are always little nicks or bumps in the surface and this should homefully get rid of them. I have painted over another color without using a primer but I usually find you have to do less coats if you do use a primer.
