I think you are on the right track but you will have to teach him to one step at a time.

Spend a day or two having him sit and stay while you back up one small step. I would give him a treat for "sit", another one for "stay" for holding for a couple of seconds, then another one for "stay" after you take your step back.. Once he has mastered this, you can take 2 small steps.
