True, but the risk is greatly decreased when you have a bitch that is a healthy, larger size for breeding. (Not to mention some knowledge and experience with what you are doing.) It's a much more minimal risk than breeding such a small female.
I realize it wasn't intentional and accidents happen, as you found out. Your small female's case is a good example: Sure, she whelped one by herself that survived, but there were complications and it had to be hand fed. There were two who didn't make it, your girl was on the verge of having to have a c-section. So in the end, it was not smooth and easy.
Why would anyone take a greater risk that could end that way on purpose?!
