You've already got a few suggestions for how we handled/handle that. Coby's kennel is right by the bed, so I can reach down easily. We also cover the crate. That has worked for both my yorkies. If I cover it, they're like bird with covered cages - they quiet down immediately (it also keeps them asleep a little later in the morning).
And when they're little, the tough part is learning to determine whether they are crying to potty or just to play. If they're not having to potty, you just can't let them out. Otherwise, they are training YOU.

Get some ear plugs, and it will be over before you know it!
