Keeping the hair long or short is really up to you. I keep Bell's hair short, leave her top knot. But Dogs are not like people, as they do not have sweat glands through out their bodies. Their sweat glands are located in the mouth (thats why they pant, to cool down) and inbetween their toes, (why some dogs like to put their feet in water) So shorter hair won't make him cooler, just easier for you, and I like easy!!
Bell had her puppies two weeks ago and I shaved her belly, I have since given her two baths, and the puppies are making a mess out of her hair. I think I will have to make it shorter, But she looks like a puppy when its short, and I like that. Remember, it will always grow again.
Whatever you do I'm sure he will always look like a little angel
