Any water that is used to dilute the carbs is just empty volume. The idea is to get as much of concentrated carbs into them as soon as possible. So, the sports drinks would not be good in this case. Also, some of those drinks have Caffeine in them.. BAD for dogs..
If you carry packets of sugar you will need to be certain that the mucosa of the mough is moist enough to mix with the dry sugar so it can be absorbed. When I taught dietary needs to diabetics, I told them to put the sugar UNDER their tongue but to take a drink or something so it would dissolve. Lots of blood vessels under the tongue and it wil absorb faster. That is why we put nitro under a heart patients tongue..it absorbs really fast from there..
