Some breeder do take the female in afterwards for an oxy shot, some don't. My vet and the breeders I've worked with only recommend it if there is a retained placenta. The female will be prone to infection so shortly after whelping and carting her and newborn pups off to a vets office to expose them to who knows what isn't always a great idea. Not to mention the stress you will put on them. Generally, my female is started on a VERY low dose (so that it is of no harm to the puppies) of preventative antibiotic a few days prior and continues afterwards. It prevents infection the same and eliminates an unneccessary trip to the vet.
Of course, this is just my opinion and experience--it differs from breeder to breeder and vet to vet. They will be able to advise you on what they feel is the best course of action.
