Maybe you could find someone that could work with you and your sweetie one-on-one. They could help you figure out at the core why this is happening. It would probably help both of you have a better quality of life. My first yorkie did that when he was little and we just laughed (mistake) later in life other friends and family didn't want to be around him as much. My nieces avoided him and they adore dogs. It was sad, because he was such a wonderful dog.
