I just started vet school three weeks ago and prior to that had never heard of blood being taken from the jugular vein. I'd only ever seen it taken from the cephalic vein in the front leg, but I knew it could be taken from the saphenous vein in the hind limb too. Apparently the jugular is much easier to find than the cephalic vein. I was also told that taking blood from the cephalic vein is more painful. I mean..I'm new to all this so I haven't had a lot of experience with personally drawing blood...but it is a common practice to take blood from the jugular vein. So far I haven't heard of any disadvantages....I'm assuming if your vet is stupid they could tear the vein which would be pretty bad...
