I don't think the barking should be your main concern. What if they have to enter your apartment? Then the hiding really gets complicated. And they may say you have to get rid of the dog, which you won't want to do, or move out yourself. Don't put your own living situation in jeopardy because of the dog. We recently moved to a new apartment, and our pet deposits here were $600 for two dogs, and some places quoted as much as a $900 deposit just for the dogs! But, it is worth it to pay all of the deposits and make sure that they are pet friendly! I wouldn't know what to do if someone told me to get rid of my dogs! But, I do think that an apartment is enough space for our dogs, as long as you take them out frequently, which I'm sure you would do! Best of luck!
