Dont beat yourself up. If you leave him with plenty of toys, maybe a TV on or radio, he will be just fine! I have many friends/ neighbors that do the same and they're pups are just fine. In fact they are quite used to it. They just make sure to take them out for a really good walk in the morning and a really nice long walk as soon as they get in. I usually see them at the dog park as well. So maybe those can be options for you? That way he can still get tons of time to socialize and get exercise? Just an idea!
