Honestly, I don't think it's "cruel", yet I wouldn't do it. BUT think of this...yes, we humans who have our ears pierced have to worry about it getting ripped out just as a dog would. But dogs would be more apt to scratch it off, hence ripping it out. And what about the after care? You'd have to twist it and clean it with hydrogen peroxide and put on Neosporin.
And then what if it gets infected? If it does and/or starts itching when it begins to heal,
guaranteed the dog will try to scratch it! So, in conclusion, I don't think it's cruel per say, unnecessary worrying and ultra bothersome to the dog, yes.
