Oh, if your dog like to rub and roll, just be sure to not leave the ear ring in all the time. Save it for special occassions or when you two are out and about together. If you are the type of person to go to dog parks, use your noggin and take it out then.
If during the healing phase you want to keep something in so the hole doesn't close, you might try fishing line looped through and use tape to cover it like a bandaid and every night clean and pull the loop through so it heals properly.
Again, just like a child.
I don't think of this as any different from docking a dogs tail that you are neither going to work in the field or show in the ring. Similarly w/ ear croppings. Further, if you were to have it pierced and god forbid your pup was ever stolen, there is now just one more way to identify your dog...not to be done because of that, but it just happens to be so.
