You can ask your vet about it and he'll tell you that they're considered harmless, just worrysome to unsuspecting owners.
What causes it? Who knows. Some say allergies, others say an irritation in the back of the throat or in the sinus cavity...others say exercise alone does it for their dog.

I took Dunks to his vet last week and she gave him some antibiotics for his coughing and we were also there because Dunks had an eye infection...
After about 2 days of giving Dunks his antibiotics, he stopped coughing... So I don't know... We'll see after he gets off the meds if it comes back. As for his eye infection, its gone! Thank goodness!
