Sounds like an "inverted sneeze". It can go in episodes of fits that seem to last forever and other times it's just a few good snorts...for lack of a better word...and it passes.
You can ask your vet about it and he'll tell you that they're considered harmless, just worrysome to unsuspecting owners.
What causes it? Who knows. Some say allergies, others say an irritation in the back of the throat or in the sinus cavity...others say exercise alone does it for their dog.
