Seriously? I have never heard of a shelter charging $1000 to adopt a dog! I'd definately go to a breeder too if that was the case. The shelters here adopt their animals for no more than about $100--and that is IF the animal still needs spay/neuter. Generally the don't go into in depth screening either (which isn't necessarily good). They may require a fenced in yard (most do) or someone with no children, or someone who is home for at least XX number of hours per day. Have you ever questioned why the rates were so much? I'd be very interested to know.
