Default Only you know what is best for your family.

My parents got a Bichon when I was like 5 or 6 and my brother was two. The Bichon was great with us and very protective. He would dare a stranger to come near us and is they did he would throw all of his 16 pounds of might at them. Just let a repair man try to come into the house or move around the house without my mother being present and he would corner them. He never bite anyone but is a dog was barking and growling at you would you chance it?

I believe that any dog can be okay with kids if both are raise with rules, boundaries and limitations. Until my brother was older she did not leave him and the dog unsupervised but really no dog and small children should be let unsupervised. A puppy could get into all kinds of trouble and could a small child.

I currently have a golden retriever, a yorkie and two maine coon cats. All are good with kids even though they were not raised with kids in the house. All were socialized to others at an early age.

Good luck.....
