It would be EXTREMELY hard to tear up these! I have some boys that used to tear up the paper ones. They don't mess with these except to go potty on them. I had no problem changing over. In fact when I first put it down they immediately went over and peed on it. They don't slide all around like paper and they don't leak. I got tired of finding puddles under my paper pads, so I switched to washable ones and won't be going back.
They are easy to wash. Just use the regular cycle in warm water. I would run it through a prewash cycle first, then the regular wash. Tumble dry on low or medium low. They dry faster than thick towels. Or if you don't have a prewash cycle run a short wash or rinse cycle first before the regular one. Don't use bleach. I have been using them for quite awhile and they still look great!
They don't seem to retain the smells at all, maybe the dogs can smell something, but I can't. Even my new puppies know to go there. I keep one in their pen and one out in the room for the bigger (adult) dogs and when I get the puppies out to play with the big dogs they know to go on the pad. Amazingly I have never had an accident in the big room with the puppies and I didn't even show them the pad! They just went there on their own!
If you haven't had her going on pads at all just put her there whenever she first gets up in the morning or whenever she shows signs of needing to go potty (sniffing, circling, etc). If you get some of her poo or pee soaked up on a paper towel you can rub a little on the pad so she can smell it and that helps, too. You can buy a similar type spray stuff at Petsmart. I have never had to do that myself. Somehow they just knew to go there.
