Hmmmm can you maybe have your mom hold him and his muzzle shut, and you take a look at his leg/paw to see if there's something in it? If so, try putting his foot (or him, really) in some warm water to help the thorn or whatever it is work its way out. After it soaks for awhile, you might be able to gently pull it out with a tweezers...

I would also check his pads and make sure one is not cut or bleeding...
