OK not to discount your story, because it's funny, but here's why.

The detectors wired to your security system are probably photoelectric. They detect smoke PARTICLES. The other cheaper ones are ionization which go off from steam, humidity or from cooking.

I know this because we have a smoke detector about 5 feet from our stove and it went off every single time we tried to cook anything. BOILING WATER would set this thing off. We replaced it with a photoelectric one and didn't have that problem anymore.
