He whines in the pen, and I don't respond to the whinning and barking, next thing I know, there's pee or poop on the paper. Was that an escape whine or a "I gotta go" whine? I tried putting him in the crate and closing it for 5 min today. He SCREAMED. I had to leave him there until he stopped, about 15min. total. I then took him outside and he urinated on the lawn. I showered him with praise. He had some run around time with me in the house, then back in his pen (not the crate). If I have to go out for a short time, should he be in the pen or crate? Sorry, I'm confused. I really want him to catch on so he has more freedom to be with us.

Hey! well i never used an x pen so i can only say from my experience. Layla was in her crate at night... if she cried we went out to pee... and then back in her crate... if she continued to cry.. then she stayed in there and cried.. i knew she didn't need to pee because we had just been out..
very good job today with the crate.... and taking him right out to pee after and the praise.. that is SO importnat!
