Holy Hypoglycemia Episode! Ok, so today strated like any other weekend day. I got up, fed Deegan (but he didn't eat much, all he wanted to do was play) then we got ready and went to visit my aunt, and then we were going to the mall.
Knowing that he didn't eat much I brought food with me, as I always do. We got to the mall, (he was in the purse carrier) walked around for about 15 minutes, then I noticed that he didn't seem as perky as he normally is. Even for being tired and in the carrier. I took him out and noticed his eyes were very glossy, he was weak and wobbling all over the place. Immediately I knew it must be a hypoglycemia epoisode. I ran to the closest food place and asked for a package of honey or syrup. They didn't have any, so I went to the next place, Burger King. I asked the girl for some syrup and she said they didn't have any.
Ok, at this point I am in a real panic because I have never experienced this before and I've heard that sometimes you only have a matter of minutes before they might slip into a coma.
And I know for a fact that they have syrup there because they serve french toast sticks, right! Right! So I said this to the girl, and she pretty much just told me that I had to buy something first. I know she doesn't understand why I need it, but she could obvisouly see from the panic stricken look on my face that I needed this badly. She's lucky I didn't hop over that counter and beat the crap out of her! But I had to order a bottled water (which I needed for Deegan anyway). I slammed down the money and went to give the syrup to Deegan.
Then I called the vet. The doctor told me that what I did was good, and that he should come around in about a 1/2 hour or so. So after I got off the phone with the vet, I jetted home which is about 20 minutes away from the mall. The whole time driving I am praying to god to let my baby get better and I am also trying not to let Deegan fall into a deep sleep because I forgot to ask the doctor if it was possible that he could slip into a coma.
Finally I get home and I give more corn syrup to him and water with a turkey baster (I know what you are thinking, but I don't have a baby dropper - but I am going to get one.) I had to use that because it was the easiest way to give him the suryp. So then an hour goes by and he's still not much better, and I am thinking that maybe I didn't give him enough. So I call the vet again, and they have to page him. The vet calls back and I let him know that Deegan still hasn't improved, he tells me to use a teaspoon of straight white sugar mixed with as little water as possible to make a thick paste or suyrp like consistancy. Try that and to call him back in about an hour to give him an update. I made the sugar and water and gave it to the furbaby, and 5 minutes later he was a bit more perkier, he would look up when I whislted and he even went to eat the fruit, and liver and cheerios that I had been trying to feed him earlier. So I took him out to pee and he did! He even trotted around a bit. So when we came back inside he still a little mellow, but much better than he had been. He was tired but the vet says that that's because he doesn't have any carbs to energize him and to keep trying to get him to eat. All in all I think that he'll be better by later tonight, and I am so grateful for the doctor being so understanding while I was practically in tears on the phone with him. And of course to god for answering my prayer to him in the car.
One thing I didn learn from this is that I am going to carry some syrup and sugar with me where ever I go with him. And go get some nutrical and to try and make him eat more before we leave the house.
Sorry this is so long, but I just wanted to get the whole story in. This was a very scary episode that I hope to avoid in the future. I hope someone learns from my story. |
